Signs, symbols, traces and remnants, these are the small details that society either takes for granted or considers blight. Tagging, peeling stickers, municipal markings, defaced bus stop benches, deteriorating signs and structures. Some of these details represent the rumblings of a disenfranchised underclass, while others simply show decay or negligence. We see these things peripherally, fleetingly, or not at all from our cars, but this semiotic representation of street life is more easily (and unavoidably) seen on foot, or on a bicycle as I often did here.

Who is Crosswalk Man, and why is he being defaced at every street corner in the city?
